The Mobile App

What the app is for, what it deliberately leaves to the browser, and the usual fixes.

Everything you need to know about the RNGESUS mobile app — from installing it to wondering why you're so emotionally attached to a piece of software about dice.

Getting it — you can't, yet

Straight answer: neither build is distributed. The iOS app isn't on the App Store and isn't on TestFlight; the Android app exists and is maintained, and it isn't on Play either. There's no price, because there's nothing to buy.

What's actually blocking the iOS one is two unglamorous items: the app target has no privacy manifest, and its Auth0 config still names the development tenant. Both have to be sorted before Apple will look at it, and neither is a design problem — just work that hasn't been done.

What it'll want when it does ship:

  • iPhone 7 or later. NFC is not optional here; it's the whole point.
  • iOS 15 or later.
  • About 50MB of storage.
  • A deep, abiding love for randomness (optional but recommended).

First launch

You'll be asked to create an account or sign in. Email or social sign-in both work — pick whichever makes you feel safest, we're not judging.

You'll also be asked to enable NFC permissions. Please say yes. Without NFC the app is a very underwhelming random number generator with delusions of grandeur.

What the app does

WhatIt does
Roll diceTap a die to generate a roll instantly.
CollectionEvery registered die in one place.
HistoryPast rolls with timestamps and stats.
StatisticsAnalyse your rolling patterns. Spoiler: it's random.
FriendsOther players' activity — including adding someone by tapping their die.
MinigamesQuick decision tools and dice challenges.
Tap-to-roll into the webWhen a character sheet or a level-up asks for a roll, the app lights up and you tap a real die for it.
Transfers & tradesGift or swap dice, with an NFC tap to prove you're actually holding the thing.

What it deliberately doesn't do

The virtual tabletop and the tavern live in the browser — including the browser on the phone you're holding.

People arrive assuming the app is the whole product and the browser is a lesser companion. It's the other way round. Native versions of the tabletop and the tavern are on the list, but the mobile web versions are the supported route and they work — so the app concentrates on the one thing only it can do, which is talk to the tags.

Offline

Yes, it works offline. You can still roll without a connection; results are generated locally. Your rolls won't sync until you're back online, and the social side obviously needs the internet.

Think of offline mode as survival mode. You can roll, but you're on your own out there.

The usual fixes

It won't read my dice. Make sure NFC is enabled in your phone's settings. Hold the die against the upper back of the phone — that's where the antenna hides — and hold it still for a second or two rather than tapping and pulling away. If it still won't read, take the case off. Some cases block NFC, which is annoying but apparently a thing.

My rolls aren't syncing. Check your connection. The app stores rolls locally when you're offline and sends them when you're back. If they're still not showing up on the web, pull down to refresh, or log out and back in. The classic fixes.

It's running slowly. Close it completely and reopen. If that doesn't help, check you're on the latest version — we're constantly making improvements, which is a polite way of saying we're constantly fixing bugs.

I forgot my password. Use the "Forgot Password" link on the login screen and we'll email you a reset. If the email doesn't arrive, check your spam folder — we promise we're not actually spam, even if our marketing emails are enthusiastic.

Anything worse than this lives in when something breaks.
